Process

Each group will be assigned one of the great Rodgers & Hammerstein musicals from the following list:  Oklahoma!, Carousel, South Pacific, The King and I, Cinderella, The Sound of Music.  As a team, research your assigned musical and gain an understanding of the components listed in the job descriptions below.  Each team member must keep a daily journal of your research process.  This journal may be kept in a notebook or in a Word document saved to your user folder.  Following each work session, complete a short entry of information gathered and the accomplishments of the group.   The RESOURCES page provides research links.  Finally, decide which role each group member would like to have.  The roles and descriptions are below:

 

Theatre Manager ~ Your job is to learn all you can about the theatre which will produce your  R & H production.  Find out how many people the theatre will hold and identify at least two significant facts about its history.  You will also decide how the theatre will be decorated to reflect the theme of the musical to be performed inside...be creative!  Summarize your findings in a one-page document and answer this question:  What is it about the production being staged at your theatre that will encourage audience members to attend the performance?  You will need to share this information with the mayor and Chamber of Commerce at your group presentation.  You must create one PowerPoint slide that contains this information that will be a part of your team's presentation.  

 

Press Secretary ~ Your job is to research the lives of Rodgers & Hammerstein.  You will create a display of biographical information that will be showcased in the lobby of the theatre.  You will also create a FAQ card to be handed out to all people who attend the show and will answer this question:  What is it about Rodgers & Hammerstein that places them among the great American songwriters? For a definition of FAQ see the glossary on the RESOURCES page.  You will present a brief history of Rodgers & Hammerstein to the mayor and Chamber of Commerce.  You must create one PowerPoint slide that contains this information that will be a part of your team's presentation.

 

Executive Director ~ Your job is to put on the show.  You need to be very familiar with the synopsis of the show so that you can give a summary of it to the mayor and the Chamber of Commerce.  For a definition of synopsis see the glossary on the RESOURCES page.  You will create a one page program of the play including the year it was written (or first produced), where the play is set, who the main characters are, and what major events take place in the musical.  You will also answer the following question:  What is about your musical that can still be considered relevant today?  You must create one PowerPoint slide that contains this information that will be a part of your team's presentation.  

 

Musical Director ~ Your job is to select 2 or 3 songs from the play that best represent the energy and excitement of the show.  You need to be very familiar with the music from the play.  You will create a musical listing of all of the songs from your musical production and answer the following question:  How does the music from this musical help to tell the story?  You will select your favorite song from the show to be played at your presentation to the mayor and Chamber of Commerce.  You must create one PowerPoint slide that contains this information that will be a part of your team's presentation.
